About the Church
The Roman Catholic chapel of Blessed John Paul II in Vecumnieki is located in the centre of the town of Vecumnieki, in the Bauska municipality, in the Semigallia region. It belongs to the Diocese of Jelgava.
A good number of Catholics live in Vecumnieki, but for a long time the community had no prayer house of its own, and the nearest church – the Basilica of Skaistkalne – is about 30 km away. In 2011, by agreement with the local Lutheran community, a Catholic chapel was set up in the premises of the former Vecumnieki school building, named in honour of Blessed Pope John Paul II.
The chapel became the centre of local Catholic spiritual life, where Mass is celebrated regularly.
