About the Church
Dusmenys Church of Sts Simon and Jude Thaddeus the Apostles is a unique example of wooden architecture, situated in the village of Dusmenys, in Trakai district. Built in 1818, this church stands by the road linking Trakai, Rūdiškės, Pivašiūnai and Alytus, so it is easily accessible to both locals and tourists.
The church's history begins as early as the 16th century, when a parish church in Dusmenys is first mentioned in 1522. However, during the Reformation it fell into decay and by the 17th century was no longer mentioned in the sources. In 1667 the famous Lithuanian magnate Mykolas Kazimieras Pacas donated the Dusmenys manor to the Camaldolese monks of Pažaislis monastery. The monks founded a chapel here, in which services began to be held in 1744.
The wooden church that can be seen in Dusmenys today was built by the same Camaldolese monks in 1818. Although simple on the outside, its interior and architectural elements have Classicist features, while its vernacular style lends it a particular charm.
During the uprising of 1863 the parish priest Steponas Gailevičius was arrested and died in prison, which reflects the church's and its community's involvement in the historical context. The post of organist here was once held by the father of Mikas and Kipras Petrauskas, who contributed to the region's cultural life.
During the years of the First World War, plans to build a masonry church were halted, but in 1920 the present church was roofed with sheet metal, and later, under various parish priests, it was continually maintained and repaired. The parish priest Jonas Žvinys, who served in Dusmenys during the Second World War, actively supported resistance participants and was sentenced for it, but after a decade returned to continue his ministry.
In 1965–1967 the church was substantially renovated. Its architecture is distinguished by a four-column portico with a trapezoidal pediment and a small tower, which give the church a sense of grandeur. In front of the church stand a wooden bell tower and a cross, which further enrich the whole complex and blend beautifully with the surrounding landscape.
Today Dusmenys Church of Sts Simon and Jude Thaddeus the Apostles not only serves a religious function but is also an important item of cultural heritage, attesting to Lithuania's complex and rich history.
