About the Church
The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Merkinė is a unique architectural monument, standing in the small town of Merkinė, in Varėna district. This site is not only a space for religious worship but also a witness to history, having preserved over the centuries many reflections of Lithuania's past.
The construction of the church dates back to the second half of the 16th century, but its walls recall even older times. The first wooden church here was built before 1387, when Lithuania accepted Christianity. Already in 1392 a parish church was mentioned in Merkinė, which was renovated in 1496. Over time, this church underwent various transformations – from Gothic style to Renaissance and Baroque features.
An important role in the church's history was played by Kazimieras, Grand Duke of Lithuania, who in 1442 granted the church property to help support it. These holdings were later augmented by other rulers, in 1516 and 1582. The church of Merkinė was always at the centre of special attention – in 1607, through the efforts of mayor Kristupas Steponavičius, a Dominican monastery was founded, followed in 1676 by a Jesuit monastery, patronised by Hetman Mykolas Pacas.
Throughout its long history, the church of Merkinė was ravaged more than once by wars and fires, but it always rose again to new life. One of the most terrible blows was the fire of 1822, in which the presbytery burned down along with all three Catholic churches – the parish church, and those of the Dominicans and the Jesuits. After the uprising of 1831 the closed Dominican monastery was handed over to the parish, and its buildings became home to the police and border guard.
From the middle of the 19th century the church was rebuilt and renovated several times. During this period the noted Father Kajetonas Aleknavičius was also active, who not only built a new presbytery but also actively promoted Lithuanian national identity. In later years, especially in the early 20th century, the church of Merkinė was the scene of intensive Lithuanian cultural activity, led by clergymen such as Kazimieras Ribikauskas, Konstantinas Jagminas and Matas Cijūnaitis.
Architecturally, the church has retained many Gothic features, although Baroque elements were also added during reconstructions. The interior is ornamented with three triumphal arches, and three naves separated by columns give the space a sense of grandeur. The church's churchyard wall is of stone masonry, and the gate with a masonry belfry, installed in the 19th century, adds a touch of Romanticism to the site.
The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Merkinė is not only a centre of religion but also of culture and history, linking the past with the present and offering spiritual and aesthetic pleasure to every visitor.
