About the Church

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Musninkai is a remarkable architectural gem, standing at the heart of the town of Musninkai, beside an important road linking Širvintos, Rimučiai, Kernavė and Dūkštos. Built in 1861, this church stands out for its Gothic Revival style and is valuable not only for religious but also for historical and cultural reasons.

The first church in Musninkai was built before 1522. Interestingly, in the second half of the 16th century it belonged to the Evangelical Reformed Church. In the 17th century, however, Catholicism again took an important place in the region. In 1614 Stanislovas Kiška III, having returned to Catholicism, built a new church. During its construction the villages of Cirkai, Draučiai and Vaitkūnai were even donated for its benefit. This testifies to the substantial support given to the church by the manor's owners and by the parishioners.

The church's history has many significant moments. In the late 18th century a parish school operated here, in which the organist taught local children, and the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary helped strengthen the religious community. In the mid-19th century the present church was built by Mykolas Podbereskis together with the parishioners. This was a particularly difficult period because of war and other hardships, but the community managed to rebuild and preserve its church.

The church's architecture is no less interesting. It is built of plastered brick masonry, with a rectangular plan, a tall tower and a vaulted three-nave interior separated by four pairs of columns. The gates leading into the church are built of stone, and the wall gives the churchyard particular charm. Beside the church stands a wooden bell tower, which is also an important element of this ensemble.

One of the most notable people buried in the church's churchyard is Father Alfonsas Petrulis, a signatory of the Act of Independence of Lithuania. A monument was erected here in his memory, recalling the importance of this place in the country's history.

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Musninkai is not only a house of prayer but also a living witness to the past, preserving many historical and cultural treasures. Everyone who visits this church can feel its special spirit and its deep connection to Lithuania's past.
