About the Church
The Church of St John the Baptist in Čiobiškis is a distinctive church, well worth a visit for any lover of history and architecture. Situated in the cosy village of Čiobiškis, near the confluence of the Musė and the Neris, this church has long attracted both local residents and visitors.
Construction of the church began at the start of the 19th century, when the landowning Šveikauskas family sold their manor to the Piłsudski family, with the obligation to build a new church. Thus, in 1810–1816, a masonry church was built, whose design is often attributed to the famous Laurynas Gucevičius, although this has not been documented. The Bishop of Vilnius, Edward Ropp, consecrated it only in 1907.
The church was built in the Classicist style, typical of the architecture of its time. Its structure impresses with simplicity and elegance: a rectangular plan, towerless, with a three-nave interior and a domed vaulted ceiling. The floor is decorated with mosaic strips, adding further charm to the interior. The church is adorned with a portrait of its founder, Jan Chryzostom Piłsudski, dated 1810.
The churchyard, enclosed by a stone wall with small shrines, reveals the spirit of the Classicist style. The complex consists of two chapels and two bell towers, which vary and complement the church ensemble. One of the bell towers has a clock mechanism, and the other a bell, which to this day calls the faithful to services.
From its very foundation the church became an important centre of religious and cultural activity. In the 18th century a parish school operated here, and in the 19th century Father Stanislovas Šlamas began holding services in Lithuanian and, through book smugglers, supplied the parish with Lithuanian prayer books. In 1912–1914 a branch of the Lithuanian Catholic Temperance Society operated here. Unfortunately, not all moments of its history were peaceful: in 1946 parish priest Liudvikas Puzonas was sentenced to imprisonment for hearing the confessions of partisans, and in 1984 the church was robbed.
Despite these trials, this church has remained the living heart of the parish and an important local monument of culture.
