About the Church

Kaunas Good Shepherd Church is one of the most modern and impressive shrines in Kaunas, located in the Dainava district. The parish was established on 28 April 1998 by decree of the Archbishop of Kaunas, Sigitas Tamkevičius, by separating off part of the territory of the St Anthony parish. At first the newly founded parish used temporary premises at the Dainava Secondary School in Kaunas.

The authors of the church's design, architects Algimantas Kančas and Marius Preisas, created a modern building that blends well with the surrounding architecture of the Dainava district. The design was approved in 1999, and in July of that same year the foundations began to be laid. On 31 August the cornerstone was blessed, marking an important stage in the construction process.

The year 2001 was significant for the parish: on 10 March Bishop Rimantas Norvila blessed the chapel's cross, and on 25 June Archbishop Sigitas Tamkevičius blessed the parish chapel, which had 120 seats. In subsequent years work continued on fitting out the church and its auxiliary premises.

Construction of the church took almost a decade. In 2004 the church's main foundations were laid, and in 2005–2007 intensive work was carried out on the walls, roof and administrative premises. By 2008 the church was practically finished: the interior was plastered, the windows and doors were fitted, and underfloor heating was installed.

A special day in the life of the parish was 22 June 2008, when, to mark the parish's tenth anniversary, a copy of the miraculous image of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Šiluva was solemnly carried into the church, with the Mass led by Archbishop Sigitas Tamkevičius himself. On 3 May 2009 the same archbishop consecrated the church.

On 15 April 2012 a reliquary of St John Paul II, holding a relic of this saint's blood, was blessed in the church. This is a particular mark of honour for the parish, donated by the Archbishop of Kraków, Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz, the Pope's special envoy, who visited the church on 5 May 2013.

Throughout this whole period, pastoral care of the parish community was provided by the parish priest, Fr Jonas Stankevičius, a licentiate in theology. Thanks to his efforts, not only was the church built, but a strong, united parish community was also formed.

Kaunas Good Shepherd Church is not only a house of prayer but also an important community centre for the Dainava district, hosting various religious and social activities intended for people of all age groups. It is a place where faith, fellowship and modernity meet.
