Paberžės Švč. Mergelės Marijos Apsilankymo bažnyčia

The Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Paberžė is a unique treasure of Lithuanian sacred architecture, situated in the picturesque village of Paberžė, near the Liaudė stream. Its history and architecture reflect not only the faith journey of the local community but also broader transformations of Lithuanian culture and history.

The history of this wooden church begins in 1787, when Šilingas, the owner of Paberžė manor, built an octagonal chapel. Though small, this chapel was an important centre of Catholic life, becoming a filial church of Surviliškis until 1853. The present church was brought from Ugioniai in 1858 and was later renovated thanks to priest Ipolitas Baronas.

The church's history is closely linked to the period of the ban on the Lithuanian press, when curate priest Antanas Kasperavičius actively distributed banned literature. However, one of the most notable figures deserving special attention is priest Antanas Mackevičius. In 1856–1862 he served in Paberžė and was one of the leaders of the 1863 uprising. In this church Mackevičius read out the insurgents' manifesto, organised a band of about 250 insurgents and fought for Lithuania's freedom. His heroic activity and tragic fate (he was hanged in Kaunas) are inscribed in the nation's memory.

In later decades, right up to 1970, priest Stanislovas Dobrovolskis, a former political prisoner, renovated and decorated the church, put the parish cemetery in order and founded a museum of church vestments. He also promoted the art of metal suns, and the original monuments he erected in the churchyard are a unique testimony to local culture. Father Stanislovas died in 2005 and is buried in the church's churchyard, where a small oak tree was planted next to the bell tower in his memory.

Architecturally, the church stands out for its Classicist portico and Baroque turret. A three-sided apse and a sacristy attached to the side of the church give the building a sense of cosiness. The churchyard is enclosed by a metal fence with masonry posts, and a 19th-century wooden bell tower completes the church ensemble. Inside and in the churchyard, works by the renowned cross-maker V. Svirskis can be found, contributing to the sacred beauty of this place.
