About the Church
The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Gudžiūnai is a genuine gem of architecture and history, located in the town of Gudžiūnai, quite close to the Kėdainiai–Šeduva road. It is a wooden church, built in 1911 to a design by architect Stanislovas Kačkovskis, its construction initiated by priest Antanas Masiulis. Before that, a small chapel had stood in Gudžiūnai, built as early as 1812, in which services were occasionally held.
Although this church is relatively young, it has deep roots and ties to the local community. The church was a filial church of the Vosiliškis parish until 1927, when an independent parish was established. This place stands out particularly for its Historicist architecture – a cruciform structure with an imposing tower above the ridge and smaller turrets on the sides, making a special impression on everyone who sees this house of God for the first time.
Inside, too, the church radiates beauty and calm. Here you can find the original organ loft, which adorns the interior and contributes to the church's acoustics. The left and right side altars and various interior details reflect the care and love with which these works of art were created.
One of the most eagerly awaited events in the Gudžiūnai parish is the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, celebrated every year on the third Sunday after Pentecost. Also worth mentioning is the feast of the Holy Name of Mary, held on 12 September or on the Sunday nearest after that date.
In the churchyard of this church stands a wayside chapel-pillar commemorating priest Paulius Rabikauskas, who was born in Gudžiūnai.
