About the Church
The Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Pagiriai is a wonderful wooden sacred building in the small town of Pagiriai, situated on the bank of the Rudekšna stream, near the Šėta–Vadokliai road. This church has a long and colourful history that begins as far back as the 17th century.
The first wooden church was built in 1626, founded by Gabrielius and Kristupas Bialozaras together with the Vilnius Cathedral canon Jonas Bialozaras. Unfortunately, this church burned down during the Northern War. However, the memory and importance of the sacred site remained alive, and so in 1742 Baltramiejus Pakoševskis built another church on the same site.
This parish faced many trials. A parish school already operated here in 1777, and in 1848 the Daunoravičius landowning family built a masonry chapel in the churchyard. Another Gothic Revival masonry cemetery chapel was built in 1827 and renovated in 1883 through the efforts of the Montvila family.
In 1876 parish priest Juozapas Šimkevičius, together with parishioners, built a new wooden, three-aisled church, in which five altars were installed. Later, in 1908, parish priest Albinas Alseika initiated the construction of a "Saulė" society school, which operated until 1914, at which time a branch of the Lithuanian Catholic Temperance Society also operated.
In 1922 a chapter of the Pavasaris youth movement was formed here, and over its history the Pagiriai parish belonged to various dioceses: at first the Diocese of Vilnius, then the Diocese of Samogitia (from 1849 to 1926), and finally the Diocese of Kaunas.
In 1944 the church burned down during a fire in the town, but faith and the unity of the community did not let it disappear. Services were temporarily held in the parish's two-storey wooden house.
In the churchyard, the masonry gate and a Gothic Revival brick bell tower have survived. This bell tower served not only a sacred but also a communal role – after renovation it became home to a local-history exhibition. The current, functioning bell tower, housed in a converted building, holds the old bell with its cast inscriptions, which rings to call people to services.
