About the Church
The Church of the Holy Cross in Paliepiai, situated in the quiet countryside of the village of Paliepiai, is a genuine gem of vernacular architecture. Although this wooden church has watched over its community and accompanied its members spiritually for centuries, at first glance it may appear quite simple. Yet its history and architectural solutions testify to deep traditions and craftsmanship.
The church's history goes back to 1754, when the first wooden cemetery chapel was built in Paliepiai. Later, around 1840, the chapel was extended and became a fully fledged church, a priest was appointed, and the building began to serve as a filial church of the Betygala parish. In the 19th century a parish school and an almshouse operated by the church, which shows that the church was not merely a house of prayer — it played an important social role in the life of the community.
Interestingly, in 1908–1914 a branch of the Lithuanian Catholic Temperance Society operated here, encouraging abstinence from alcohol and the strengthening of moral values.
Architecturally, the Church of the Holy Cross in Paliepiai has a rectangular plan, a single nave, and an elegant turret rising from the ridge of the roof. The tall gable is crowned by an octagonal turret, divided by cornices and covered with a Baroque helm roof. The front façade's door is covered by a low porch adorned with a four-column portico, lending the building a sense of grandeur and classical style.
Inside, the church is likewise striking in its beauty. The high altar stands out for its relief-decorated entablature frieze and the volutes of its small pediment. The side altars are fitted with elements of a similar style, creating a harmonious whole.
The churchyard is set off from its surroundings by an iron gate with a pierced arch between masonry pillars. A masonry wall partly separates the churchyard from the cemetery, but there are a few graves right next to the church — a reminder of the close bond between the living and deceased members of the community.
Very close to the church stands a three-tier wooden bell tower, whose Baroque helm roof resembles that of the church's own turret. In this bell tower hangs a special bell, cast in the workshop of Antanas Zvolinskis in 1852 — it has been calling the faithful to prayer for more than a century and a half.
So although the Church of the Holy Cross in Paliepiai is not a grand cathedral, its history and architecture testify to the deep spiritual and cultural value it offers its community and visitors.
