About the Church
The Church of Our Lady, Comforter of the Afflicted, in Pajieslys is a special place, in the village of Pajieslys, in Kėdainiai district. This wooden church, built on the right bank of the Jiesla (a left tributary of the Šušvė), is a fine example of vernacular architecture and has a rich history.
The church's origins go back to 1857, when it was first built. Later, in 1913, the church was rebuilt, and the construction was overseen by Teodora Piłsudska (1811–1886), lady of the Pašušvys manor. Teodora not only funded the construction but devoted her life to the welfare of the community, for which she is respected and remembered to this day.
The small, rectangular-plan church has a distinctive architecture. Its roof is adorned with small turrets, which lend the building uniqueness and elegance. A sacristy is attached to the church, seeming to merge with the main building. In the churchyard there are four works of art and a cemetery, where various people important to the community rest.
One of the most notable people buried in the churchyard is Teodora Piłsudska, née Butler, grandmother of the famous statesman Józef Piłsudski. She too was an active public figure and contributed to the building of the church and the strengthening of the community.
