About the Church
The Church of the Holy Trinity in Spirakiai is a wonderful heritage site located in the village of Spirakiai, near Panevėžys. Standing on the left bank of the Lokupė (a left tributary of the Sanžilė), this church is distinguished by its stone-masonry architecture and historical significance.
The first chapel here was built as early as 1790, when Antanas Liutikas, the owner of Spirakiai manor, decided to set up a house of prayer for the local residents. The present church, however, came somewhat later, in 1840, when another manor owner, Antanas Rimkevičius, built a stone-masonry church. It is worth noting that this church was consecrated in 1860 by the famous Bishop Motiejus Valančius, known as one of the most active figures of the Lithuanian temperance movement.
The church's presbytery was renovated in 1880, and in the early 20th century, in 1926, it was granted a plot of 8 hectares of land. Thanks to the priest Petras Uleckas, in 1936 the interior of the church was fully repainted, giving the church even more warmth and beauty.
Architecturally the church is rectangular in plan, measuring 17 × 9 metres. The church has one tower with a small turret, and two altars are set up inside. In the churchyard, which also contains a cemetery, stands a three-tier wooden bell tower and a chapel, which is now used as a storehouse. The churchyard is enclosed by a stone-masonry wall, which blends well with the whole surroundings.
