About the Church

The church of St James the Apostle at Suvainiškis, standing in the small town of Suvainiškis right by the border between Lithuania and Latvia, is an impressive stone church in the Historicist style, whose history spans more than two centuries.

The first church at Suvainiškis was built in 1782 on the initiative of Antanas Kamarauskas. It was a small wooden church which attracted a great deal of attention from the outset and became an important centre of the community. Kamarauskas even invited the Canons Regular of Penance and assigned a substantial plot of land to the parish. Unfortunately, when the repressions of the Russian Empire began, the church was closed in 1832 and the monastery was abolished. However, the local people continued to seek to have their own house of prayer and did not give in to the difficulties.

A new stage began in 1862, when, through the efforts of parish priest Antanas Mackevičius, construction began on the present stone-masonry church. Construction was completed in 1863, but Mackevičius himself was exiled on suspicion of supporting the insurgents of 1863. Fortunately, he returned to Lithuania after a few years.

The church went through many changes and trials over time. In 1933 Bishop Kazimieras Paltarokas consecrated it. Between the wars the parish received additional land from the Ratkūnai manor, and on the initiative of Fr Steponas Ramanauskas a new almshouse with a hall was built in 1939–1940. However, during the Second World War two of the church's three bells were lost, taken away to Rokiškis and never returned. Despite this, the church was repaired several times, both after 1947 and in 1982.

Architecturally, the church of St James the Apostle at Suvainiškis is a splendid rectangular-plan, two-tower building with three altars. Its churchyard wall is likewise made of stone masonry, giving the whole structure a solid and enduring impression.

This church is not only an important religious site but also a significant historic place, bearing witness to the endurance, faith and persistence of the Suvainiškis community across the ages.
