About the Church
The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Asūne (Roman Catholic) stands in the village of Asūne, in the Krāslava municipality, Latgale. It belongs to the Diocese of Rēzekne–Aglona.
The first wooden church here was built in 1680, with the involvement of the Jesuits and funding from the King of Poland. The present masonry church was built on the site of the old one in 1816 and consecrated in 1819; construction was funded by the parishioners and the clergy.
It is a single-nave, cross-plan masonry church, about 38 metres long and 19 metres wide, holding about 128 people. Inside are four altars with religious paintings and sculptures, and the organ is in working order; a three-bell bell tower stands in the churchyard.
