About the Church
The Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Pustiņa (Robežnieki) stands in the village of Robežnieki, in the Krāslava region, in southern Latgale, near the border with Belarus. It belongs to the Diocese of Rēzekne–Aglona.
The first wooden church was built in the parish cemetery in 1737. Construction of the present masonry church, led by Fr Stanislav Malakovski, began in 1817 with funds from parishioners and the support of Count Plater; the work was completed by Fr Adam Kolenda, and the church was consecrated on 24 January 1899 by Archbishop Kozlovski.
It is a three-aisled red-brick church without a tower, roofed with sheet metal; a large cement cross rises above the facade, and two wooden sculptures from the earlier church survive in niches on the facade. Inside stand three wooden altars of Gothic form with paintings by the artist Bolesław Tomaszewicz. The church, built in the Romanesque style, still serves the local Catholics.
