About the Church
The Church of St Mary Magdalene in Auleja (Roman Catholic) stands in the Auleja civil parish, the Krāslava municipality, Latgale. It belongs to the Diocese of Rēzekne–Aglona.
The first wooden Catholic church here was built in 1530 and is considered one of the oldest wooden churches in Latgale. In 1626 the Auleja manor passed to the Jesuits, who built a new wooden church. After a fire in 1685 a temporary church served in its place, and the present masonry church was built in 1709. The Jesuits served the parish until 1820.
It is a twin-towered Baroque masonry church, about 32 metres long and 16 metres wide, holding about 82 people. The main altar features wooden sculptures, decoration with grape motifs, and an image of St Mary Magdalene.
