About the Church
The Church of St John the Baptist at Ciskādi stands in the village of Ciskādi, in the Sakstagals civil parish, in the Rēzekne district, in the Latgale region. It belongs to the Diocese of Rēzekne–Aglona.
The first wooden church was built here in 1751 at the expense of the landowner Pranciškus Sokolovskis and was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The present masonry church was built in 1900 by the parish priest Vincentas Tomašūnas, with the engineer Vileišis overseeing the construction; in 1914 Archbishop Vincentas Kliučinskis of Mogilev consecrated it in honour of St John the Baptist.
It is a red-brick Romanesque Revival church, about 42 metres long and up to 49 metres high, with a three-aisled interior. It retains a cross of 1795, the work of the sculptor Stratužicka from the old church. The church is protected as a cultural monument.
