About the Church
The Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady of Sorrows in Rēzekne rises in the town of Rēzekne – the unofficial capital of Latgale – and is one of the more significant 20th-century Catholic churches of the region.
The parish was established in 1934. In 1932 a monastery of the Marian Fathers was founded on this site, and construction of the church, on land donated by Liudvika Voicechovska, began in 1935 and continued until 1939. The work was led by Fr Juris Kārkle, and the windows were designed by Janis Jaškovičius. The church was consecrated on 6 December 1937 in honour of Our Lady of Sorrows.
It is a church of plastered masonry in the Romanesque Revival style, 25 metres long and 12 metres wide, with a tower 27 metres high. The interior consists of three aisles, divided by columns; it has three altars – the high altar dedicated to Mary, and the side altars to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary and to St Joseph. The semicircular apse is adorned with sculptures of St Joseph and St Thérèse of the Child Jesus, and the high altar holds a painting from the early 20th century depicting the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple.
In the church garden stands a statue of Our Lady of Fátima. The church remains an important place of prayer and gathering for the Catholic community of Rēzekne.
