About the Church
The Roman Catholic Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Rundēni stands in the settlement of Rundēni, in the Ludza region, in eastern Latgale, near the border of Latvia and Belarus. It belongs to the Diocese of Rēzekne–Aglona.
The masonry church was built around 1820 by the Polish nobleman Andrzej Szachno. Members of the Szachno family are buried in a crypt beneath the chancel; the crypt was sealed after 1946 to protect it from desecration.
The main building has no towers, and a separate bell tower with two bells stands beside it; the church is enclosed by an iron fence on a stone foundation. The church still serves the local Catholics.
