About the Church
The Church of Sts Peter and Paul the Apostles in Pilda stands at the centre of the Ņukši civil parish, Ludza municipality, and is one of the largest wooden churches in Latgale.
The first small wooden chapel in Pilda was built in 1699 by the Dominicans of Pasiene. In 1922, parishioners led by the parish priest Albertas Uljanas began building a new church at their own expense – they built it in masonry around the old one, following the surviving building's plan with only minor changes; the church was consecrated on 29 June 1926.
The church is built in the form of a cross, is 24 metres long and 12 metres wide, and has 27 windows and two tall front towers. Its high altar (18th century) and two side altars (around 1700) are cultural monuments of national significance.
