About the Church
The Roman Catholic Church of the Mother of God in Znotiņi is a small masonry church in the village of Znotiņi, in the Preiļi municipality, in southern Latgale. The church belongs to the Diocese of Rēzekne–Aglona and is dedicated to the Mother of God.
The church was set up in the former grain store of Znotiņi Manor: after the land reform that followed the First World War, local residents, who lived far from other parishes, asked for permission to turn the granary into a church. The building was rebuilt and fitted out in 1925–1926 through the efforts of the vicar Antonas Rukmanis, and blessed in September 1926. It is a modest single-nave red-brick building, a mere 9 metres long and 6 metres wide.
Cardinal Julijans Vaivods, who came from this region, is linked to the Znotiņi parish. The small church, which preserves a 19th-century silver chalice and a wooden crucifix, still serves the local Catholic community.
