About the Church
The Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Trinity in Vārkava stands in the settlement of Vecvārkava, in the Preiļi municipality, in southern Latgale. The church belongs to the Diocese of Rēzekne–Aglona and is dedicated to the Holy Trinity.
Catholic churches already stood on this site in the 17th century — these were wooden churches. The present masonry church was built in 1877–1880, through the efforts of parish priest Andrijus Čegys, of red brick and split fieldstone, and in 1896 it was consecrated by Simonas, Bishop of Mogilev. It is a large, three-aisled building about 40 metres long and 20 metres wide.
The Vārkava church is listed among the architectural monuments of local significance and is an important centre of spiritual life for the region's Catholic community.
