About the Church
The Roman Catholic Church of St Boniface in Alūksne is a modern church in the town of Alūksne, in north-eastern Latvia, near the border with Estonia. It belongs to the Archdiocese of Riga and is the newest church in the town.
The church was blessed in 2001; it was consecrated by the Metropolitan Archbishop Jānis Pujats. Designed by the architect A. Krusts, the church was planned to blend modestly among the surrounding residential houses – the building resembles a small house with a little tower and a cross, without the traditional elongated ground plan.
The church is dedicated to St Boniface, the apostle of the German peoples. This dedication was not chosen by chance: construction was supported by the German Catholic organisation "Bonifatiuswerk", whose patron is this saint. The altar is adorned with the painting "The Holy Family" and an image of St Boniface.
