About the Church
The Roman Catholic Church of the Blessed Sacrament in Gulbene is a modern Catholic shrine in the town of Gulbene, in north-eastern Vidzeme. It belongs to the Archdiocese of Riga.
Construction of the church began in 1996 to a design by the architect Gunta Graudupe and was completed within two years – it was solemnly consecrated on 19 December 1998; the foundations and the new shrine were consecrated by Archbishop Jānis Pujats. It is a spacious masonry building with two towers almost 24 metres high and annexes on either side of the chancel.
The church's walls are adorned with striking paintings, and a special atmosphere is created by the organ, consecrated in 1999, which came from Austria and is around two hundred years old. The shrine is dedicated to the Blessed Sacrament and is a significant centre for the Catholic community of Gulbene.
