About the Church
The Roman Catholic Church of St Meinhard in Ogre stands in the town of Ogre, on the Ogre and Daugava rivers, in Vidzeme. Ogre is one of the larger towns near Riga, which grew in the 20th century into a resort and recreation area.
In 1995 the Ogre town council, supported by Archbishop Metropolitan Jānis Pujats, allotted a plot of land for building the church. Designed by the architect Laimonis Šmits, the church was completed in 1997. The church houses a state-protected cultural monument — a wooden altar made in 1901 in the workshop of R. Heizermanas, to a design by the architect V. Bokslafas.
The church is dedicated to St Meinhard, the first Bishop of Livonia, who spread Christianity in the 12th century on the Daugava, at Ikšķile. Beside the church a garden has been laid out with a metal cross and a stone altar. For the Catholic community of Ogre, this church is a significant centre of spiritual life.
