About the Church
The Roman Catholic Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Lielvārde stands in the town of Lielvārde, on the right bank of the Daugava, in Vidzeme. Lielvārde is widely known as the birthplace of Andrejs Pumpurs, author of the Latvian national epic Lāčplēsis, and as the home of the famous Lielvārde sash.
In 1936 a plot of land was allotted to the local Catholic community for a church and a cemetery. The church, built to the design of engineer A. Strazdinis, was completed in 1940. In 1992 it was renovated to a design by the architect Pēteris Rudzis, and on 25 October of the same year Archbishop Jānis Pujats consecrated the renovated church.
The church is dedicated to the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, a feast that recalls the finding of Christ's cross and its saving significance. The titular feast is celebrated on 14 September. This church is an important place of spiritual life for the Catholic community of Lielvārde.
