About the Church
The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Valmiera (Valmieras Vissvētās Jaunavas Marijas Debesīs uzņemšanas Romas katoļu baznīca) is a wooden Roman Catholic church in the town of Valmiera, on the river Gauja, in the Vidzeme region.
The church building has a long history: the wooden church was originally built in 1621 in Vīšķi (in Latgale) and was rebuilt several times over the centuries. In 1938 it was moved to Valmiera and re-erected here – the craftsman Viktoras Račko commemorated this event by carving an inscription into a beam of the building.
The church is dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It belongs to the Vidzeme Deanery of the Riga Archdiocese and is one of the few wooden Catholic churches in northern Latvia, gathering the Catholic community of Valmiera.
