About the Church
The Roman Catholic Church of Christ the King in Cēsis is a Catholic shrine in the historic town of Cēsis, in the heart of Vidzeme, famed for its medieval castle. It belongs to the Archdiocese of Riga.
The Catholic community in Cēsis grew stronger between the wars, as more Catholics settled in the town. For a long time the parish had no premises of its own, until, in the 1920s, several old houses were acquired on Palasta Street. One of them – a masonry building – was rebuilt in 1928 and adapted as a church.
The shrine is dedicated to Christ the King. The modest church, converted from a residential house, still serves the Catholics of Cēsis and the surrounding area, being the spiritual centre of a small but living community.
