About the Church
In the village of Pakražantis, in a picturesque spot on the right bank of the Kražantė river, stands the Church of the Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary at Pakražantis. This architectural ensemble is known not only for its religious significance but also for its interesting history and architectural value.
The church's origins reach back to 1764, when the manor owners Bonaventūras and Marijona Kiaunarskiai built the first wooden church. Unfortunately this building did not survive to the start of the 20th century – it burned down in 1879. After this event, the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs granted permission in 1880 to build a new church of stone masonry. This church, too, met with misfortune, however: in 1891 lightning struck the church and caused a fire that badly damaged it. Nevertheless, three years later, in 1894, the church was rebuilt and became a solid religious centre for the town.
In 1921 a parish was established at Pakražantis, further strengthening the church's role in the local community. From then on it became not only a house of prayer but also an important space for cultural and social activity.
Architecturally, the Pakražantis church has a rectangular plan and a single tower, with attached sacristies. Inside are three altars, which complement the interior with their beauty and distinctiveness. The churchyard fence is made of wood, lending the church's surroundings particular cosiness. In addition, there is a cemetery in the churchyard, where local residents of various periods rest.
