About the Church
The Church of Divine Providence in Palonai is a wonderful architectural gem, set in the small town of Palonai in Radviliškis district. Standing on the picturesque bank of the Palonas (a right tributary of the Kiršinas), this church is a true witness to the region's culture and history.
The church's history begins as early as the 18th century, when the first chapel in Palonai is first recorded in 1782. Soon after, in 1788, it was granted 25 margas of land and became part of the parish of Baisogala. In time the chapel became an important part of the local community.
An interesting fact from its history: the priest Liudas Adomauskas, who served as the priest of the Palonai filial church from 1918 to 1919, even organised Bolshevik councils. In 1921, however, he decided to give up the priesthood, a rather unusual and bold step for the time.
The priest Mykolas Ruseckas, who arrived in Palonai in 1927, began a new stage in the church's history. He himself designed a new church and presbytery, and also saw to their construction. By 1935 the presbytery had been built, and in 1939 a stone masonry church rose in place of the old chapel. This was not easy work, but the community's determination and Father Ruseckas's vision bore fruit.
Architecturally the church has a rectangular plan, no tower, and an apse. Its facade is adorned with a fresco, which lends a particular sense of beauty and sacredness. Inside one can admire three altars and an organ loft, which leave no one indifferent even today. A wooden bell tower stands in the churchyard, recalling older times. Beside it are old grave crosses, which silently bear witness to the stories of the people who once lived here.
