About the Church
The Church of the Holy Trinity in Sidabravas is an impressive Neoclassical monument, standing in the town of Sidabravas, by the river Kiršinas. This church has a long and rich history, beginning as early as 1829, when the owner of the Rokoniai manor, Matas Tracevskis, decided to build a masonry church near the village of Miškiai.
Although the church was built in 1829, its size and significance grew over time. In 1858 it was enlarged and became a filial church of the parish of Šeduva. Later, in the early 20th century, the church was extended again – construction work took place from 1906 to 1909, when a sacristy and chapel annexes were built and the altar paintings were restored.
A particularly interesting part of the history of the Church of the Holy Trinity in Sidabravas is connected with the well-known Lithuanian writer and public figure Juozas Tumas-Vaižgantas, who served as priest here from March 1906 to January 1907. It was a short but important period, during which this eminent figure contributed to the life of the local community.
The church's interior is no less impressive. In 1939 important repair works were carried out, during which the interior was repainted and a pneumatic organ was installed, giving the altar area a particular sound quality. After the Second World War, the church was renovated by the parish priest Pranciškus Masilionis, whose contribution is not forgotten – he and other parish priests, such as Mykolas Selickas and Leonardas Skardinskas, are buried in the churchyard.
The architecture of the Church of the Holy Trinity in Sidabravas perfectly reflects the Neoclassical style. It has a cross-shaped plan, no tower, and a masonry bell tower stands in the churchyard, its ringing always a reminder that Mass is approaching. There are also masonry Stations of the Cross shrines in the churchyard, reinforcing the sacred atmosphere.
The church has been renovated more than once. One of the largest renovations took place in 2004, when the main altar and the platform were replaced and painting work was carried out. In 2014, marking the 185th anniversary of the town of Sidabravas and the Church of the Holy Trinity, the town gathered to celebrate solemnly its beloved church and its long history.
