About the Church
The Church of the Holy Trinity in Baisogala is one of the most notable architectural masterpieces in Radviliškis district, standing in the centre of the picturesque town of Baisogala, by the bank of the river Kiršinas. This impressive church, built in 1882, is a beautiful blend of historical architectural styles – Neo-Romanesque, Gothic Revival and Neo-Renaissance features intertwine in harmonious combination.
The church's history goes back to the 16th century, when in 1539 King Sigismund Augustus of Poland issued a document establishing the parish of Baisogala and granted the church 50 valakas of land. At first a simple chapel without a priest stood here. The first wooden church, built on a cross-shaped plan, was consecrated in 1637 but tragically burned down in 1774. A temporary shelter replaced it until the church was rebuilt and consecrated again in 1781.
In 1795 an altaria was established at the church, and in the early 19th century several villages, such as Januškonys and Piepaliai, belonged to it. Permission for the construction of a new masonry church, which began in 1877, was granted by the Russian Minister of the Interior, and the funding was provided by Vladas Komaras, owner of the Baisogala manor estate. 28,653 roubles were allocated for the construction – a considerable sum of money at the time.
The new church was completed in 1882 and consecrated by Bishop Mečislovas Paliulionis. The church has a single-tower structure with annexes, its corners and facade crowned by elegant turrets. The churchyard is enclosed by a tall wall of stone and brick masonry, adding further historical and aesthetic value.
