About the Church
The Parish of St Clare in Kiviõli is a small Catholic community in the oil-shale-industry town of Ida-Virumaa; services are held in the building at Vabaduse pr. 3. Between the wars, a good number of Polish Catholics worked in Kiviõli's oil-shale mines, and a Catholic church was built for them on Piiri Street — during the Soviet period, in the 1940s, it was confiscated and handed over to the Orthodox community of the Moscow Patriarchate.
The present-day Parish of St Clare is served by the priest Józef Gondek from Ahtme; Mass is celebrated on Sundays in Russian.
