About the Church
The Catholic community of Viljandi, which belongs to the Diocese of Tallinn, has no church of its own — on Sundays at 15:00 Mass is celebrated in Estonian in the Lutheran Church of St Paul (Pauluse). The community is served by the priest Wodzisław Szczepanik, who also looks after the Catholics of Pärnu and Paide.
The Pauluse church was built and consecrated on 30 October 1866 to a design by the architect Matthias von Holst — it is a neo-Gothic building of red brick and fieldstone. The spacious interior is lined on three sides by galleries, and the interior is adorned with a Nuremberg chandelier and the largest fully mechanical organ in Estonia, made by Guido Knauff.
