About the Church
The Church of St Michael the Archangel in Rietavas is a basilica in the Romanesque Revival style, built in 1873. It was built under the direction of the local bishop and the architect F. Stüler, over a construction period of more than a decade. Inside, the church has three naves and a transept, which has a single tower at the crossing. The church has a metal fence with masonry gates. Near the church there is a cemetery with a chapel. It is a documented fact that the site of the present church had been used as a Catholic church since 1529, and afterwards, until 1589, it belonged to the Evangelical Reformed community. The church was rebuilt in 1853 to replace a wooden church, erected on the same site at private expense. After the First World War, the church was renovated.
