About the Church
The church of Christ the King at Barzdai stands in the small town of Barzdai, about 7 km north of Pilviškiai, on the road from Pilviškiai to Šakiai and Jurbarkas, in the Šakiai Deanery. It is a plastered masonry church in the Historicist style, built on a Latin-cross plan with three apses and one tower.
The first wooden chapel at Barzdai was raised around 1796, and in 1819 a parish school began operating. The parish was established after the First World War. The first parish priest, Antanas Petrauskas, extended the chapel in 1920 and built a presbytery, and in 1922 founded a girls' domestic-science school.
The present masonry church was completed in 1931–1934 by parish priest Stanislovas Mikelkevičius. After the Second World War the church was repaired and decorated by parish priest Vincas Čėsna. The church has a 12-stop organ built by the Lithuanian master Jurgis Astrauskas. In 2014 the church's 80th anniversary was solemnly celebrated.
