About the Church
The Church of the Holy Spirit at Nemirai is a wooden church in the vernacular architectural style, built during the difficult years of the Second World War. The parish was established in 1942 by the Bishop of Vilkaviškis, Antanas Karosas, on the initiative of priest Aleksas Labanauskas. The wooden church was built in the spring of 1943, raised jointly by residents of the surrounding villages as well as of Jankai. Juozas Urbonas, the owner of the Sasnava sawmill and mill, donated timber and bought the bell.
Having lost its permanent priest after the death of parish priest Pranas Šukys in 1978, the church was for a long time served from neighbouring parishes; in 2014–2015 it passed from the Šakiai Deanery to the Marijampolė Deanery. The church has a rectangular plan, with one tower and a porch.
Its most valuable object is a bronze bell cast in 1683 in Königsberg by the master Matthias Wilhelm Peter, bearing reliefs of the Annunciation and the Three Kings; in 1993 it was declared a cultural monument of national significance.
