About the Church
The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Leipalingis stands in the small town of Leipalingis, Druskininkai municipality, on the left bank of the river Seira.
The parish here has been recorded since 1778, and the construction of the present masonry church was begun in 1806 through the efforts of Canon Antanas Kruševskis; the church was consecrated in 1821. The plastered masonry church, in the Classicist style, has a rectangular plan, its interior is divided into three aisles by pilasters, and traces of the Baroque also survive in the building.
Over the centuries the church has been renovated more than once: in 1873 a new high altar was installed to a design by the Warsaw artist E. Ceglarski, and in 1885 a wooden bell tower was designed by the architect E. Lipski. The present organ, with eighteen registers, was built in 1926 by the craftsman Antanas Mačiulis. Beside the church there still stands a stone churchyard wall and the chapel of St Agatha.
