About the Church
The Church of St George in Veisiejai stands in the small town of Veisiejai, Lazdijai district, in a picturesque land of lakes.
The first church here was founded around 1525 through the efforts of Jurgis Simanavičius. In the second half of the 18th century the Masalskis family had begun the construction of a masonry church, but it was halted by the owner's death. The present masonry church was completed in 1817 through the efforts of Viktorija Oginskytė-Zinevienė.
The plastered masonry church, with features of Neo-Baroque and Neoclassicism, is protected as a cultural monument. At the end of the 19th century a struggle raged here over services in Lithuanian — from 1897 mixed services in Lithuanian and Polish were introduced. In 1907 the church was renovated, and the “Žiburys” society established a library.
