About the Church

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Liškiava rises majestically on Bažnyčios kalnas, on the left bank of the Nemunas, in the small town of Liškiava — one of the most beautiful spots on the loops of the Nemunas, near Druskininkai.

The present masonry church and monastery were built in 1704–1720 by the Dominicans, to whom the manor had been donated by Vladas Jurgis Kosila. The church, in the Late Baroque and Rococo style, has a Greek-cross plan, with a dome and two low quadrangular towers, and its greatest treasure is seven lavish altars, considered among the finest examples of Lithuanian Late Baroque.

The church also preserves traces of musical history: in 1899 the Warsaw master Szymański built an organ for Bishop Antanas Baranauskas, and the organist at Liškiava was Konstantinas Čiurlionis — father of the composer Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. Beside it stands a wooden bell tower from the late 19th century, and in the church's basement there is a museum dedicated to the Dominican heritage.
