About the Church
The Church of St John Paul II in Marijampolė stands in the Mokolai microdistrict of Marijampolė, on J. Ambrazevičius-Brazaitis Street. It is the youngest church in the city, named after the holy pope.
The parish was founded on 7 July 2011, and the first parish priest appointed was Marius Rudzinskas, who took charge of building the church. The plot was donated to the parish by the businessman Gintaras Vilutis. On 21 October 2014 the wooden church was blessed – it is the former Chapel of Our Lady Queen, built in 2007 and donated to Lithuania by the Catholics of Lastrup (in Lower Saxony, Germany).
The entire wooden church was dismantled and transported to Lithuania together with its pews, altar, paintings and interior fittings. Its walls are clad with oak boards, and the roof is covered with tiles. The small church, about 100 square metres in area, holds around 150 people.
