About the Church
The Church of St Mary Magdalene in Šunskai stands in the small town of Šunskai, about 10 kilometres north of Marijampolė, on the right bank of the Žvirgždė, a tributary of the Šešupė.
In the mid-18th century a chapel stood in the village cemetery, and in 1795 a masonry church was built, belonging to the parish of Vilkaviškis. The present brick church was built in 1865 through the efforts of Father Simonas Kudirkevičius and was consecrated by Konstantinas Irenėjus Liubenskis, Bishop of Seinai. In 1906 Father Jonas Totoraitis established a branch of the “Žiburys” society and a library here.
The stone and brick church is Gothic Revival, with a rectangular plan, one tower, and a low three-sided apse. The churchyard is enclosed by a metal fence with a stone base and brick pillars, and a chapel is incorporated into its wall.
