About the Church
The chapel at Lūginė stands in the village of Lūginė, on the left bank of the Šešupė, west of Puskelniai, on the flat Sūduva plain. It is a young but spiritually significant place, closely connected with the life of Blessed George Matulaitis – it was here that he spent his childhood and youth.
The chapel was built in 1991 to a design by the architect Zigmas Brazauskas. The plastered-masonry building is marked by a vertical bell tower, visible from afar on the Sūduva plain. The chapel is served by priests of the Marijampolė Basilica of St Michael the Archangel.
Every July, during the octave of the memorial of Blessed George Matulaitis, pilgrims flock here. Youth processions, hymns, Mass and evening prayers turn this place into a living centre of faith. The chapel at Lūginė is included in the Pope John Paul II pilgrimage route in Lithuania.
