About the Church
The Church of Christ the King in Santaika is a wooden church standing in the village of Santaika, Alytus district, 10 km east of Simnas. It was built in 1929 by local craftsmen using traditional folk building methods. It still stands today and is recognised as a regional architectural monument. Construction of a masonry church began in 1937, but was not completed because of the Second World War, and the building was later used as a warehouse. The parish could have reclaimed the building after Lithuania regained independence, but because of its dwindling numbers decided to remain with the old wooden church. The church has the form of a traditional dwelling house with two small towers and is a unique regional monument.
