About the Church
The Church of St Joseph in Karvys is one of the most impressive historical and architectural monuments in Vilnius district. Standing in the peaceful surroundings of the village of Karvys, beside the picturesque western shore of Lake Karvys, this church undoubtedly draws the attention of the faithful and architecture enthusiasts alike.
The church's history began in 1779, when Točilauskis, the owner of the Karvys manor, built the first wooden church. Although it was more modest then than it is today, it became an important focal point for the community even at that time. The church was endowed with the Masionys manor farm and the village of Karvys, and its parish began operating in 1783, after separating from the parish of Maišiagala.
Nevertheless, in 1861 tragedy struck the church – it burned down. But the parishioners did not give up. In 1862–1865 the walls of the present masonry church rose on the old site. The new church was built of stone and brick, and its architecture is dominated by the Gothic Revival style of the Romantic period. It is a two-towered, rectangular-plan structure, its exterior and interior gleaming with Gothic features.
This church is not only an architectural gem – it is also of great importance to the local community. Services are held in both Lithuanian and Polish, reflecting a multinational and multilingual parish. It is a place where different cultures and traditions meet, strengthening faith and a sense of community.
An interesting fact about the Church of St Joseph in Karvys is that at the end of the 19th and the start of the 20th century most parishioners spoke Lithuanian, whereas today Polish is often heard as well. This shows how the local community has changed and developed over time.
The churchyard surrounding the church, with its cemetery, lends the place even greater historical significance. The churchyard fence, built of stone masonry, also blends beautifully with the church's architecture, creating a sense of harmony and permanence.
