About the Church
The small town of Rimšė, a peaceful, cosy corner in the north of Lithuania, hides one of the country's more interesting architectural gems – the Church of the Holy Trinity at Rimšė. Standing on the southern shore of Lake Ilgis, this wooden church draws in passers-by with its history and architecture.
The church's history began as early as the 17th century, when Feliksas Pacas built a chapel in 1669. This was the first step towards the church that stands today. Almost a century later, in 1747, a new church was built, which soon became the spiritual centre of the local community. From 1749 register books began to be kept at Rimšė, showing the growing importance of the parish.
But time does not stand still. In 1803 the old church was pulled down, and a new wooden church rose in its place, the one that still stands today. The church not only served as a house of prayer but also became a centre of education – a parish school operated here in 1862–1863.
At the end of the 19th century, in 1896, the church underwent significant alterations – it was allowed to add a sacristy and a porch with wooden columns. All this lent the building still more architectural charm.
In 1925 the church at Rimšė was given parish status, which testifies to its importance and influence on the local community. During the interwar period, when Lithuania was occupied by Poland, branches of the Rytas society and the Society of St Casimir were active at Rimšė, contributing to the fostering of cultural and religious life.
Architecturally, the Church of the Holy Trinity at Rimšė is a single-tower church on a cruciform plan, with a three-sided apse. Its churchyard fence, of stone masonry, lends a further sense of solidity and authenticity. The interior and exterior of the church are adorned with wooden details, revealing a level of craftsmanship and care typical of buildings of that period.
