About the Church
The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Rūdiškės is one of those special places where both history and architecture create a unique atmosphere. This church, located in the town of Rūdiškės, near Trakai, was solemnly built as a masonry structure in 1932, radiating a distinctive spirit through its Romanesque Revival and Gothic Revival features.
The story of this church begins in 1908, when the authorities permitted the building of a church for a filial branch of the Trakai parish. The first priest, A. Žemaitis, set up an altar in a dwelling house in 1909 and began holding services – a plain house became a shrine where people could pray together. In 1921 a parish was established, and the priest J. Jurkevičius, together with parishioners, built the present masonry church over seven years, from 1925 to 1932.
The architecture of this church truly deserves attention. Historicist elements together with Romanesque Revival and Gothic Revival features give the building a distinctive character. The single-towered church, built on a Latin-cross plan with a small turret, impresses with its elegance. Inside, three aisles create a sense of space, and the churchyard, enclosed by a masonry wall, further reinforces the grandeur of the place. Indeed, this church is not only beautiful on the outside – inside one can find valuable cultural treasures, such as the painting "The Sacred Heart of Jesus" and the sculpture "St Joseph".
The church is not only aesthetically appealing but also remains an important part of the community. Services are held in both Lithuanian and Polish, showing its openness to different cultures and traditions. In addition, during the celebration of the parish's centenary in 2010, a Lourdes grotto with a memorial plaque was built – symbolising the community's attachment to its history and traditions.
