About the Church
The church of St John the Baptist in Paluknys is an interesting example of wooden architecture, standing in Trakai district, in the village of Paluknys, near the Vilnius–Varėna–Grodno road. The church has a long and eventful history marked by various changes and trials.
The first chapel in Paluknys was built as early as 1794. Later, in 1829, the local manor owner Jonas Volfgangas built a new wooden chapel at his own expense. The building became an important religious centre for the local population. The chapel was improved and enlarged in 1906, when Mykolas Sadovskis donated it to the Diocese of Vilnius together with other buildings and 2 dessiatines of land.
In 1921 a parish was established in the village of Paluknys, and in 1926 the church underwent a further renovation – towers were added, giving the building grandeur and monumentality. Sadly, during the Second World War this place of worship suffered a grievous disaster. On 25 June 1941 German soldiers burned down the church, and the fire killed Father Kazimieras Packevičius, who had served in Paluknys since 1915.
Despite this tragedy, faith and the community's resilience did not let the church disappear. In 1943 a temporary church was built, which became the new spiritual centre for the local people. In 1981 this temporary church was reconstructed: it was lengthened, widened, and a tower was added, which became its main feature.
The church of St John the Baptist is a rectangular-plan basilica-type building with a single tower and a porch. Inside, the three naves are separated by columns, and the church has three altars, which give it a particular sacred character.
It is interesting that the parish also has the Gojus chapel, which complements the spiritual life of the Paluknys church. On the church grounds a memorial stone can be found, marking the spot where the burnt-down church once stood. Nearby there is an old cemetery, a reminder of the centuries-long history and traditions of this locality.
All these details testify not only to the architectural value of the church but also to the spirituality and endurance of the local community through various historical trials.
