About the Church

The church of the Annunciation of the Lord in Lentvaris is one of those architectural gems that astonish not only with their appearance but also with their rich history. The church stands in Lentvaris, just 7 km east of Trakai. Although its present façade was built in 1926, its history begins much earlier.

In 1897 Vladislovas Tiškevičius, together with the inhabitants of the Lentvaris area, petitioned the authorities for permission to build a church. However, the first requests were rejected. Only in 1905, once a design had been drawn up by the Italian architect O. Bongi and permission had been granted, was a temporary church built. Finally, in 1910 a design by the engineer Aleksandras Antonovičius was approved, but it was still a long wait before the present church was built.

The present church, which we can see today, was completed in 1926. It is a Romanesque Revival place of worship, almost square in plan, towerless, with a three-sided apse. The three-nave interior is adorned with columns, and a tall bell tower attached at the south-eastern corner adds further charm. A fieldstone wall encircles the churchyard, giving the place a sense of intimacy and enclosure.

Inside the church an early-19th-century painting of “St Joseph” is preserved, along with a 1943 wall painting by the artists L. Torvirtas and J. Hoppenas. These works of art not only adorn the church but also testify to the region's cultural and artistic heritage.

Over the years many priests served in the Lentvaris parish, among them the Siberian deportee Juozapas Karaliukas, who served as priest in Lentvaris until his death in 1963. Each parish priest left his mark on the parish's history, contributing to its spiritual and material wellbeing. The list of parish priests begins with Alfred Grzybowski (1906–1909) and continues to the present parish priest, Gintaras Petronis, who arrived to serve in 2010.

The church of the Annunciation of the Lord in Lentvaris is today an important part of the local community, where services are held in both Lithuanian and Polish. The church serves not only as a place of religious observance but also as a cultural heritage site, reflecting the region's rich history and artistic heritage.

So, should you ever find yourself in Lentvaris, be sure to visit this Romanesque Revival place of worship, whose walls hold not only stone and brick but also the faith, effort and love of its people.
