About the Church
The Church of Divine Providence in Vilnius is one of those churches whose history is full of change and various vicissitudes. Located in Vilnius, near Vilkpėdė, this church has served both local residents and visitors to the city for more than a century.
The church was built in 1913 and became a filial church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus parish. This masonry building, designed by the noted architect Antoni Wiwulski, is in the Gothic Revival style – recognisable by its rectangular plan, turrets and single-nave structure. The author of the design, Augustas Kleinas, also deserves credit for his contribution to the architectural beauty of this church.
From 1927 the church belonged to the Salesian order, but its fate soon changed. During the Soviet period, in 1948, the church was closed and handed over to the state drama theatre. It became a set-storage depot, and the faithful lost the opportunity to visit their house of prayer. However, this was not the final stage in this church's transformation.
In 1960, by decision of the Council of Ministers, the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was closed, and the Church of Divine Providence was returned to the faithful. From 1961 services were held here again, celebrated in both Lithuanian and Polish, so that every worshipper can feel heard and understood.
The church has a particular aura, reinforced by its Gothic Revival architecture: the turrets, the apse and the churchyard fence with its masonry piers all create a distinctive atmosphere. This is not merely a building – it is a witness to history and spirituality, which has lived through many hardships and challenges yet has still remained an important place for the Vilnius community.
Today the Church of Divine Providence not only serves as a house of prayer but is also a cultural heritage site, attracting both locals and tourists. On visiting it, one can sense the spirit of different eras and grasp how powerfully religion can influence and shape the life of society.
